Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

During the Trans-Atlantic Slaves Trade, French Guiana belonged to the French and was home to over 400,000 slaves. Those slaves were transported from all over Africa's west coast. "Whilst males origins spread throughout the north of the bight (from Benin to Senegal), female origins were spread throughout the south (from the Ivory Coast to Angola)."(Brucato 314) Slavery in French Guiana started in 1604 and ended in 1815. "Nine to ten million Africans...arrived to work in the plantations from 1604 to 1815 for mainly Dutch, but also English, French, and Portuguese Jew settlers."(Brucato 314) Compared to the nine to ten million of American slaves, French Guiana only had 400,000.
